Buy Hearing Aids Online or Get Them Fitted at a Clinic? What Really Differs

Audiology8 min read

You can buy hearing aids online, but what you get is mainly the device. A clinic-fitted hearing aid comes with a hearing test, programming to your results, a physical fit check and follow-up adjustments. Before you buy hearing aids online, it helps to know what you might be skipping and whether your hearing is a good match for a self-fitted device at all.

Online shopping for hearing devices has grown, partly because of a US category of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. This article explains what that category is, what a professional fitting involves in general terms, and the questions worth asking whichever route you choose.

What "online hearing aids" usually means

Products sold online range from simple sound amplifiers to devices sold as hearing aids that you set up yourself. In the United States, the FDA created an OTC hearing aid category. According to the FDA, OTC hearing aids are for adults aged 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, and they are not intended for severe or profound hearing loss. They can be bought in stores or online without a medical exam, a prescription or a fitting by an audiologist. People under 18 need a prescription hearing aid.

The NIDCD adds that with OTC devices "you fit them yourself", while with a prescription hearing aid a hearing health professional fits the device and adjusts it based on your hearing loss.

These are US rules. If you are in Oman and see a device advertised online, check what it actually is: a sound amplifier is not the same as a hearing aid. We explain that difference in Hearing aid or cheap sound amplifier?

What a clinic-fitted hearing aid includes

A hearing test first

A hearing aid is chosen and programmed from your hearing test results. The test shows whether there is hearing loss, its type and degree in each ear, and whether anything needs medical attention before a hearing aid is considered. At our clinic, the hearing test may include pure-tone audiometry, speech testing when needed and a middle-ear check, and no referral is needed.

Programming to your results

At the fitting appointment, the audiologist programs the hearing aids to your test results, checks the physical fit and shows you how to use, clean and charge them or change batteries. Fitting may include ear impressions for custom moulds when needed.

Checking the fit in your ear

Professional guidance describes how fittings can be checked in the ear itself. ASHA's guidance for audiologists calls real-ear measurements, in which a thin probe tube in the ear canal measures the sound the hearing aid actually delivers, "the gold standard in hearing aid fitting verification". If this matters to you, ask your provider how your fitting will be checked.

Follow-up and fine-tuning

Hearing aids are fine-tuned at follow-up visits as you get used to them, because sounds you have been missing can feel unfamiliar at first. Our after-sales care includes programming, fine-tuning, maintenance, follow-up, cleaning and periodic check-ups, and home support for patients who are unable to come to the clinic. You can read how this works in our Danavox hearing aid fitting service.

Buy hearing aids online or get them fitted: side by side

Buying online

  • Usually no hearing test, so a medical problem or a hearing loss that is more than mild to moderate can be missed.
  • You set the device up yourself, which suits some people and frustrates others.
  • Fit, comfort and feedback (whistling) problems are yours to solve.
  • Local after-sales support, warranty handling and maintenance may be limited or unclear.

Clinic-fitted

  • Starts with a hearing test, and a style is chosen for your ear and hearing.
  • Programmed to your results by an audiologist.
  • Follow-up visits to adjust the settings as you get used to the sound.
  • A local team for cleaning, maintenance and questions.

Why follow-up matters after you buy

Getting the hearing aid is the start, not the end. In the first weeks the brain relearns sounds it has been missing, such as footsteps, rustling paper or your own voice, and these can feel loud or unnatural at first. Without someone to hear your feedback and adjust the settings, some people give up and leave the device in a drawer.

Follow-up also covers practical things: cleaning microphone and receiver openings, replacing domes or wax guards, and checking that the hearing aid still sits comfortably. Hearing can change over time too, and a retest shows whether the programming needs updating. So when you compare options, ask what happens after a month, six months and a year: who do you see if the sound weakens, the device whistles or your hearing changes?

Warranty and service: read the conditions

Every Danavox hearing aid from Jordan Hearing & Speech comes with a one-year warranty from the date of purchase. It covers manufacturing defects and maintenance, with a periodic visit every three months during the warranty that includes a hearing test (audiogram), programming and free maintenance. It does not cover breakage, misuse, cut wires or hearing aids dropped into liquids, and it has a condition: the hearing aids must not be programmed at another hearing centre, and no repair may be attempted by a technician who is not part of our centre. The full terms are on our hearing aids page.

Whatever you buy, and wherever you buy it, ask who will service it locally and what voids its warranty.

When an online purchase is not the right first step

Based on FDA and NIDCD guidance, see a professional rather than relying on a self-fitted device if:

  • You struggle to follow conversation even in a quiet room.
  • You have ear pain, or fluid, blood or pus coming from the ear.
  • Your hearing is worse in one ear, fluctuates, or you hear ringing in only one ear.
  • You have severe dizziness.
  • The hearing aid is for a child.

A sudden change in hearing needs urgent medical care the same day, not an online order.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. Is this a hearing aid or a sound amplifier?
  2. Who is it designed for: what age and what degree of hearing loss?
  3. Do I need a hearing test first, and what did mine show?
  4. Who will program it, check the fit and adjust it later?
  5. Who services it locally, and what are the warranty terms and conditions?
  6. Will it work with my phone or TV, if that matters to me?

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy hearing aids online without a hearing test?

In the United States, OTC hearing aids for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss can be bought without an exam. A hearing test is still the only way to know the type and degree of your hearing loss and whether anything needs medical attention first.

Are online hearing aids suitable for severe hearing loss?

According to the FDA, OTC hearing aids are not intended for severe or profound hearing loss. Prescription hearing aids are programmed by a professional for your specific loss.

Can you program a hearing aid I bought elsewhere?

That depends on the device and whether it can be programmed by a clinic. Bring it to an appointment and ask. Note that our own warranty condition applies to hearing aids bought from us: they must not be programmed at another hearing centre.

Can children use online hearing aids?

No. The FDA states that people under 18 need a prescription hearing aid. Decisions for children belong to the audiologist and ENT after a paediatric assessment.
