Wondering if this is right for you?
01How often should I get my hearing checked?
There's no single answer that fits everyone — it generally depends on your age, whether you have any risk factors (such as regular loud-noise exposure or a family history of hearing loss), and whether you've noticed any changes. As a general guide, many hearing care professionals suggest a baseline check for adults around midlife and more frequent checks for older adults or anyone with known risk factors. This is general information, not a personal recommendation — a hearing care professional can advise on what's appropriate for you specifically.
02What's the difference between a hearing screening and a full hearing assessment?
In general terms, a screening is a quick check intended to flag whether further evaluation might be worthwhile — it's not usually detailed enough to diagnose the type or degree of any hearing difficulty. A full assessment is more thorough, typically covering a wider range of tones, sometimes speech understanding, and a fuller discussion of your hearing history, giving a much more complete picture. If a screening suggests something worth looking into, the usual next step is a full assessment with a qualified professional.
03Can hearing loss be prevented?
Some causes of hearing loss — such as those related to aging or certain medical conditions — aren't preventable in a general sense, but noise-related hearing loss, which is common, is largely preventable through everyday habits like limiting exposure to loud sound and using hearing protection. This is general awareness, not a guarantee for any individual, since hearing health depends on many combined factors. See our article on protecting your hearing in everyday life for general, practical habits.
