From Test to Follow-up: Your Hearing Aid Journey at Jordan Hearing & Speech

Audiology8 min read

Getting a hearing aid at Jordan Hearing & Speech follows a clear path: you book a hearing test without a referral, we explain your results and options, you choose a hearing aid with the audiologist, it is fitted and programmed to your results, you go through a period of getting used to it, and then you come back for a periodic visit every three months during the warranty, alongside our after-sales services. Each step builds on the one before.

Many people think of buying a hearing aid as buying a device, finished once it is paid for. In reality, the hearing aid is the start of ongoing follow-up. Here is the whole picture, step by step, with links to detailed articles for each stage.

The steps at a glance

  1. Book an appointment, no referral needed.
  2. Hearing test.
  3. Results and options explained.
  4. Choosing your hearing aid.
  5. Fitting and programming.
  6. Getting used to it.
  7. Follow-up visits during the warranty.
  8. After-sales services and maintenance.

Step 1: Book your appointment

You do not need a referral for a hearing test at Jordan Hearing & Speech. You can book an appointment online, or call or WhatsApp us on +968 9171 8373. The clinic is in Bousher, Muscat, opposite Oman Mall.

Before you come, note where hearing is hardest for you: family gatherings, the phone, the TV or work. If you have earlier hearing test results or a hearing aid you already use, bring them. Many people also like to bring a family member, who often notices things the person with hearing loss does not.

Step 2: The hearing test

Everything that follows is built on the test. It shows whether there is hearing loss, its type and degree in each ear, and whether anything needs medical attention before a hearing aid is considered. We test both adults and children, through our adult hearing test and assessment and children's hearing test services.

We will not repeat the details of the test here. If you want to know what happens in the room and which tests are usual, read What to Expect During a Hearing Assessment.

Step 3: Your results and options

After the test, the audiologist explains your audiogram in plain language: which pitches you hear less well, by how much and in which ear. From there, the next questions become clear:

  • Do you need a hearing aid at all, or is something else the right next step, such as seeing a doctor first?
  • Do you need one hearing aid or two?
  • Which styles suit your degree of hearing loss?

Ask about anything on your mind, including price. We do not publish prices online, because the right hearing aid depends on your assessment. The price depends on the technology level, the style, rechargeable or battery power, one or two hearing aids, and any accessories you need. Once your options are clear, you can ask for a quote for a specific model.

If the test points to something that needs medical care, such as an ear infection or a blockage, that comes first. If you notice a sudden drop in hearing, ear pain with discharge, or dizziness with hearing loss, see a doctor promptly rather than waiting for a hearing aid appointment.

Step 4: Choosing your hearing aid

Jordan Hearing & Speech is an authorised dealer for GN Hearing – Danavox in the Sultanate of Oman. Our hearing aid catalogue includes eight Danavox families, covering behind-the-ear, receiver-in-canal and completely-in-canal styles, with rechargeable models as well as models that use zinc-air batteries.

No single model is "best" for everyone. The choice balances a few criteria:

  • The degree and type of hearing loss shown by your test.
  • Your lifestyle: work, gatherings, the phone and TV.
  • Ease of use: size, how easy the hearing aid is to put in and clean, and charging or changing batteries.
  • Appearance: how much it matters to you that the hearing aid is discreet.
  • Rechargeable or battery: whichever fits your daily routine.

If you watch a lot of TV or spend time in meetings and gatherings, ask about Danavox accessories too, such as TV streamers, a remote microphone or a remote control. They are optional, our team confirms they are compatible with the hearing aid you choose, and you do not need them unless they help you.

The final decision is made with you after the test, not before it.

Step 5: Fitting and programming

At the fitting, the audiologist programs the hearing aids to your test results, checks the physical fit and shows you how to use, clean and charge them or change their batteries. This is part of our Danavox hearing aid fitting and follow-up service.

Ask questions freely, and ask for anything unclear to be shown again before you leave. For the details, the fitting appointment article under related articles walks through it step by step.

Step 6: Getting used to your hearing aids

Adjusting takes time, because your brain is relearning sounds it has been missing. Your own voice may sound different at first, and you may notice sounds you had forgotten, like the air conditioner or footsteps. That is expected, and regular wear helps you adapt.

A few habits help at this stage:

  • Start in quiet rooms at home, then move gradually to gatherings and busier places.
  • Wear your hearing aids every day, not only for special occasions.
  • Practise putting them in, taking them out and cleaning them until it feels easy.
  • Ask family to speak clearly and face you, without shouting.

Note the situations that are still difficult or uncomfortable; these notes are what the audiologist uses to fine-tune the settings. You will find practical tips in the article on getting used to new hearing aids, listed under related articles below.

Step 7: Follow-up during the warranty

Every Danavox hearing aid from us comes with a one-year warranty that starts on the date of purchase and covers manufacturing defects and maintenance. During the warranty there is a periodic visit every three months, which includes a hearing test (audiogram), programming and free maintenance.

These visits are not a formality. To understand why repeated fine-tuning matters, see the programming and fine-tuning article under related articles.

The warranty does not cover breakage, misuse, cut wires or hearing aids dropped into liquids. Its condition: the hearing aids must not be programmed at another hearing centre, and no repair may be attempted by a technician who is not part of our centre.

Step 8: After-sales services and maintenance

Our after-sales services are available and include programming, fine-tuning, maintenance, follow-up, cleaning, periodic check-ups and home support for patients who are unable to come to the clinic.

At home, simple daily care keeps hearing aids working well, especially with summer heat, humidity and sweat. If you notice a change in your hearing or in how your hearing aids sound, contact us rather than waiting for your next visit. A sudden drop in hearing, though, needs prompt medical attention: see a doctor straight away.

Making the most of each follow-up visit

Follow-up visits are most useful when you come prepared. Before each one:

  • Note the situations that are still hard, such as gatherings, the car or the phone.
  • Notice any sounds that are too sharp or loud, or any whistling from the hearing aid.
  • Bring your hearing aids and the charger or batteries you use.
  • Mention any change in your hearing or ear health since the last visit.

The more specific your notes, the more precisely the settings can match what you need.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral for a hearing test?

No. You can book the test yourself, online, by phone or on WhatsApp, without a letter from a doctor.

Will a hearing aid restore my hearing to normal?

No. Hearing aids do not restore natural hearing or reverse hearing loss. They make sounds audible and speech easier to follow, and the benefit differs from person to person. Regular wear and follow-up adjustments make a real difference.

What does the visit every three months include?

During the warranty, the periodic visit every three months includes a hearing test (audiogram), programming and free maintenance, under the warranty terms in Step 7. It is also your chance to describe situations that are still difficult.

What if a patient cannot come to the clinic?

Our after-sales care includes home support for patients who are unable to come to the clinic. Contact us to talk about what you need.
